It is a common misconception that disability benefits are immediately available to you the moment you become disabled.  This is simply not true. The Social Security Administration has created a complicated procedure one must follow in order to obtain either Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) or Social Security Supplemental Income (SSI) benefits. In order to qualify for Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) an applicant must meet the following requirements:

• Earning Requirement - You must have workers for a certain period of time during the years you became disabled with FICA taxes having been deducted from your earnings. These deductions are your “payment” into the system and provide you with potential eligibility for coverage. If you do not meet these requirements you may still be eligible for Supplement Security Income (SSI) benefits as discussed below.

• Disability Requirement - You must meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disabled. According to the SSA, you are disabled if: 1) You cannot perform the work you did before you became disabled; 2) You cannot perform any other job available in the national economy; and 3) Your disability condition will last for at least twelve (12) months.

If you are ineligible for SSDI benefits, you may be eligible for SSI benefits
If you are disabled and do not qualify for SSDI benefits, you may be eligible for SSI benefits. Benefits are available to individuals who are over the age of 65, blind, or disabled. They are also available to disabled children.
